Robin Hood Costume

Robin Hood…even reading or saying his name brings back floods of memories to me as a child growing up!  I even made a home made bow and arrow and practiced shooting for many a long afternoon and acting out the Prince of Thieves scenarios.  The Robin Hood Costumes that we offer here are very nice for men and women who have a bit of the Sherwood Forest in them. Everyone wants to be the hero and there are some heroes so iconic that everyone knows who you are talking about when you say, “Stole from the rich and gave to the poor!” The velvet forest green tunic has beige sleeves/collar with red trim around the sleeves. The fake-suede boot covers are a clever way to wear your most comfortable shoes. The classic hat with the red feather sets off the costume for a great and ease-of-wear use. The costume has a brown satchel/belt, puffy-sleevelettes, the iconic Sherwood Hat with obligatory feather and matching boot covers. You are sure to please all the Robin’s Merry Men! Robin Hood, the Prince Of Thieves, the ruler of Sherwood Forest…he is known by many titles. He and his merry men ran all over the English country side and we all praise him for it! I have had a fascination with Robin since I was a kid. I have watched every Robin Hood movie that was ever made by Hollywood EXCEPT the one released recently that starred Russell Crowe due to health reasons. This iconic figure is without a doubt one of mankind’s greatest heroes. He stands for everything that is honorable and just in man (and woman! :) He was the guy that looked out for the little guy. He defended the defenseless and the down-trodden. You get the point…he was “superfly” of Sherwood Forest! LOL! In the most current movie, I hear from friends that this movie concentrates more on the politics and corruption so I am not sure that I am ready to listen to the movie in today’s political climate. But who knows, maybe if the bad guy gets his just-deserts in the end, I will still enjoy it!

By the way, have you ever thought of having a “Robin Hood Party”? You could have as the obvious guest of honor, Robin Hood of Sherwood Forest and earned title of Prince of Thieves (and do not forget his Robin Hood sword not his hat! :) . You would obviously invite his Merry Men… Little John, Friar Tuck, Will Scarlet and of course, Maid Marian! Auuugh…Robin and Marian…there goes a love story begging to be told on the big screen AFTER the restoration of the kingdom by Robin and his men (and woman! :) . Maybe we will see a good movie Robin Hood dvd come out on this some day. I doubt that they would try to tell it on the big screen as interest is doubtful.  Probably straight to dvd it will go. Maybe we need to check Disneys Robin Hood to see if that is a good one…I honestly can’t remember how they told the story. I do vaguely remember watching the original Robin Hood with my Mom and Dad eons ago and there I was hooked. My Dad liked it so I in turn trying to find some common ground with my Dad, really liked it by default.

One of my all time favorite Robin Hood movies is Robin Hood: Men in Tights. I couldn’t stop laughing at this movie as it was a great parody.

20th Century Fox presents the motion picture event of the summer…the summer of 1125 AD.

Sherrif of Rottingham: That’s him..that’s…
Marian: Robin Hood!

The Hoods from the Woods are back.

Little John, Prince John, the Sherrif of Rottingham, Maid Marian

He’s the first action hero and the last word in comedy!

Prince John asks Robin Hood: “And why should the people listen to you?”

Robin Hood: Because unlike some other Robin Hoods, I can speak with an English accent!”

Best line in the movie! :)

Robin Hood: Men in Tights a Mel Brooks film (The legend had it coming! :)

The Real Robin

Think of an outlaw…the first outlaw…the most famous outlaw of all time…one name stands alone…Robin Hood!

Russell Crowe:  I think the central thing that people respond to with Robin is the idea that there is someone out there that is willing to redress the balance.

Over 700 years ago people are telling stories about Robin Hood around the campfires and taverns of medieval England.  In those times a massive number of “have-nots” against a teeny number of “haves” so he would always be against oppression.  He robbed from the rich and gave to the poor and he’s a champion of the people.  Was there an actual hero called Robin Hood?

Finding him is a detective story.  No one has ever claimed to have met him or saw him.  The search for the him begins with the excepted details of the legend that have survived throughout the ages.  According to the legend, he lived in Nottinghamshire during the reign of King Richard The Lionheart at the turn of the 13th century.  If there was an actual Prince of Thieves, he probably lived between 1180AD and 1280AD…certainly that is when the legend would have been born.  One of the big questions?… was he a Yorkshire ‘ man or from Nottingham-shire.  As you might guess, both cities are extremely passionate about it!

He is born into the yeoman’s class…neither rich nor poor and became an outlaw.  Outlaw back then meant that you were placed outside the law and anyone has the right to kill you.  One way of escaping punishment was indeed to become an outlaw to places that were “off-putting”…to go and live in areas that people would not like to visit and/or were dangerous.  Medieval England was densely wooded and hazardous to travel and to go from town to city was very dangerous.  First of all, there were outlaws…thousands of outlaws living in the forest of England.  Real hungry desperate men.  And there were wolves that carried bounties on their head.  So thus the outlaws were known as “wolf-heads” with a price on their head.  Robin Hood’s men were known as the “merry men”.  The context of the Sir Locksley tale was that there were young men living as they will free to come and go as they pleased in the green wood living off of the king’s deer which these men enjoyed poaching, taking part in archery and sword fighting.  The myth was around from time immemorial…he lives kind of a Utopian life in the Sherwood Forest.   It is a site of idealized freedom.  However, this forest was considered what they called a Royal Forest.  Those that lived in it could not cut wood or hunt animals.  This forced those that lived there to be beholden to a Lord or Master for sustenance.

The Sheriff of Nottingham was an important figure and nemesis to Robin.  But you can see why sheriffs of that time were extremely important.  They were the eyes and ears for the interests of the reigning king…financial, judicial, militarily, intelligence, etc.  We are aware that a jail was ordered by King John to be build around the time of Robin.  In the legend, the Sheriff was notorious for being the bad guy and history at that time shows that there were comparable Sheriffs of this ilk at the time.
